Versatile Walk-Around Lens, December 2, 2010 By This review is from: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras - Gray Market (Electronics) The is one of the most popular lenses, and with good reason -- you get a lot of bang for your buck. It has USM for fast focusing, images stabilization (IS), and a very versatile focal range that covers wide angel to mid-telephoto. For the most part, its only downside is the f/4 aperture limitation.
- Sharpness
This lens is sharp across all focal lengths. I haven't noticed any degradation on either the 24mm or the 105mm end. F-stop is another matter. The lens is sharpest between f/8 to f/11. Outside of this "sweet-spot" (i.e. below f/8 or above f/11) shots of distant objects are *noticeably* blurrier. (See uploaded images on the product page for a comparison images shot with different f-stops.)
For relatively close subjects, however, the difference in images quality across f-stops is a lot less perceptible - that's good news if you're going for a bokeh in your portrait shots by opening up the aperture.

EF 24-105mm f/4 vs. 24-70mm f/2.8, February 14, 2012 This review is from: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras - Gray Market (Electronics) I debated over two whether buying the 5D MKII (body only) and the 24-70 or the 5D MKII with the kit lens. I love the the 24-105mm, fantastic build & IQ and it is only $600 when you buy the kit, it was too hard of a deal to let pass. I figured if I really needed/wanted the 24-70mm, I could sell the 24-105mm for more than I paid for it, but I don't think I really want to get rid of it. I don't think you would regret getting either, I don't think you should factor in the IS in your choice between the two, just if you need the extra stop.
